Celebrating Black History

Bridging Ethnicities @ Two Sigma (BE@TS) is an employee resource group that aims to foster racial and ethnic diversity by supporting a culture that is inclusive to people of color.

As February is the shortest month of the year, we kicked off Black History Month celebrations early and will continue them into the month of March.

January:

Hidden Figures Screening and Chat with Angelique Roche of the Ms. Foundation

In partnership with the Women at Two Sigma (W@TS) employee resource group, we gathered 100+ employees and guests for a screening of the critically acclaimed film Hidden Figures. Directly following the screening, we were joined by Angelique Roche, VP of External Affairs at the Ms. Foundation to engage in a conversation about the themes in the film. The film and the resulting conversation were an inspiring reminder of all that you can achieve when you get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

February:

Fireside Chat with Marcus Mitchell

Marcus Mitchell, Senior Engineering Director at Google NY, shared his experiences with our employees at our marquee Black History Month event. The focus was the impact of the black community in the technical industry.  Immediately following the event, we hosted catering from black-owned businesses Home Sweet Harlem and Make My Cake.

March:

International Women’s Day Event with Theodora Lacey

In celebration of International Women’s Day in March, BE@TS will again partner with W@TS to welcome Civil Rights Activist and Lecturer, Theodora Smiley Lacey. We are excited to have deeper conversations with her focused on inclusion and staying involved in our communities.

National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE): Hackathon

Following the success of our first year sponsoring the NSBE Conference in 2016, we are excited to increase our involvement with the conference this year. We will co-sponsor the hackathon and look forward to engaging with attendees. Details forthcoming.

Hack Day with /dev/color

We are excited to host the New York chapter of /dev/color, a non-profit organization whose mission is to maximize the impact of Black software engineers.  Fifty members of /dev/color will join BE@TS representatives for a day of hacking and networking, ending with presentations of final hacked products in the Two Sigma quad.

We continue to celebrate Black history and to engage members of our Two Sigma community in learning more about the contributions and experiences of all people of color throughout the year. BE@TS is an integral part of the Two Sigma community and we celebrate their work!
